LOGIN HELP File: login.help Author: course (send problems to walton@das) Version: 3 To log into the fas system and the course computers you need a Harvard login name and a password. You must first register for a computer course to get these, after which either your instructor or other official will give you your login name and password, or you will be asked to run a computer `register' program to get a login name and password. If you are in summer school and do not have an account by 1pm on the day AFTER you completed registration, then you should go see the registrar at 51 Brattle street as there is likely a flaw in your registration (e.g. some form or small fee that needs attention). One logs in by typing your login name at the `login:' prompt, and then your password at the 'Password:' prompt. Each is ended with a carriage return (RETURN or ENTER key). The password is invisible when typed. The following is advice specific to the terminal or workstation type you are logging in from. PC's in the Science Center: Log into the PC using your login name and password. Type `Ctrl-ESC' and then `3', or click on `Start' at the lower left of screen and then `Internet Software' -> `CRT-Telnet'. Then double click on `ice.fas.harvard.edu' and log in at the `login:' prompt. You may wish to grab the top of the window with the mouse and drag it up and left to make the window more visible. Then you may wish to grab the lower right of the window with the mouse and drag it down to get a longer window (but keep the width at 80 columns so your lines will not be too wide for the printouts). You can open a second window by selecting File and then `New Window'. When you are done, log out of UNIX and then double click on `Logout' (which may be at the left of the screen: if it is hidden behind windows, move, close, or exit these windows till you see it). Macintoshes in the Science Center Login as above with your own login and password. Enter your login and password in the `Laser Printer Authentication' window if you wish to print, or choose `Cancel' if not. Double click on `Internet Software' and then `Better Telnet' and then `Better Telnet' again. Give the connection name `ice.harvard.edu' and click on CONNECT. You will get a login prompt. Log in. You may wish to click `Session' `Set Screen Size' and change to 40 lines. To open another window, go to the File menu and click on Open Connection. After logging out from UNIX, double click on `Log Me Out' (which maybe at the right bottom of the screen). Alpha Workstation's in the Science Center Simply log in. Then execute ~lib51/bin/xterm-large to make a large xterm window, or ~lib51/bin/xterm-small to make a smaller window. You may make any number of windows. You may also use the icons on the right side of the screen to start programs. The icon with a terminal and a red check mark starts more xterms. General: Sometimes the commands: stty erase '^?' set term=vt100 are needed to make the DELETE, BACKSPACE, and arrow keys work properly.
